The xx came to Singapore last week and gave a fantastic concert at the new Star Vista concert hall. I caught the one on Friday with Fatmah and Madelyn! Our seats were rather good - second level circle seats - with access to the end of the balcony - which of course I ran down to a rather perfect photographer's spot. I was looking forward to Sunset, and they didn't disappoint. If I wasn't torn between getting good photos and properly listening to the gig, I might have teared a little :'D Here are my photos!
Ok so first I want to talk about how difficult it is to photograph Oliver Sim. He practically takes large waltzy strides a la ministry of funny walks across his half of the stage. While it is visually pleasing and seems to make for good photo moments - I just have over 100 blurry photos of him in very awkward poses. XD So the ones you see here are the result of my efforts at capturing him on stage. Generally he's quite an intense performer as compared to the other bands I've photographed.
I didn't realise I captured this 'sexy tongue' moment until I was reviewing the photos on my computer XD. I'm not a photographer who abuses the multi-shot function, so it's really a lucky shot.
here's an example of one of his moves, mid-waltz.
like a ballerina with a streamer/mic-wire
I do rather like this moment
taking a swig while talking to the crowd
my favourite photo of Oliver.
Romy by contrast is a very calm performer, who is comparatively easy to photograph, but it's difficult to capture her emotions on stage. The stage lighting is very flattering for Romy and Oliver though, which was great. Only Jamie wasn't as well lit, but then again somehow members of the band standing behind isn't always well lit.
I love this photo of Romy taking in the crowd at the star vista. Here's a pano of the concert hall I took:
my favourite photo of Romy! X-ed by red lasers
teh god Jamie Smith
especially like the spindly legs of the tables as Jamie pours over his desk like a spider
well actually Jamie has some 'teh god' lighting, but mostly he was plunged in darkness
The lighting design for the concert was superb. This is my favourite lighting config from the gig.
the xx lasersz!
...as you can see, Jamie is indeed plunged in darkness in these ones. (perhaps trying to justify why I ended up with more photos of Oliver than Romy or Jamie.)
Skewered by lasers!
Here are the group shots yo
at this point my camera refused to focus properly and I was going crazy because I almost missed this moment.
My favourite group shot of a band ever. They were lined up so perfectly in their last song, I took so many photos of them in this composition, which is a little reminiscent of bohemian rhapsody...
and my favourite photo of Romy and Oliver.
I haven't taken gig photos for so long (the last time was tdcc in january this year) that I was pretty much losing control of my camera 50% of the time D: I even forgot my nifty manual-focus trick, which might have gotten me better shots. But meh, I'm pretty happy with these that I captured! This was the best lit gig i've ever shot to be honest. The performers were always in light, and the ambience lighting was always flattering - meaning no overly green/purple tones that turn the performers into goblins.
However that being said, i'm really sad that I couldn't capture the last moment with a crisp photo. Here's a stitched together instagram I posted:
It was a really cute moment of them offering each other a hand, and they walked off stage hand-in-hand :3 SO CUTE. BFFS4EVA.
I've a policy of never ever posting my crap photos online however cute the moment is, so that crappy instagram taken from my computer screen with my phone is all you'll get XD
IT WAS A BRILLIANT CONCERT. I'm glad to be able to say that i've seen The xx live :D
